"It would be nice to see it kept up," said Mr. Benniot, who often visits the deserted town by speed boat.
All the church records were removed in 1990 and taken to St. John's United Church Archives for preservation.
The community was told that by having the church moved it may loose its designation, however given the situation the heritage foundation decided that if the funds were found and the move went ahead the church would keep its status seeing as it is still one of the oldest churches in Newfoundland and possibly in the Atlantic provinces.
Mr. Whittle said someone would have to show ownership papers for the church or that they have permission from the owner to access these grants, which can be as large as $30,000.
As a designated a Registered Heritage Structure, Bethany United Church is eligible for restoration grants. Although the community has resettled, the grants are still available.
At the time the church was 139 years of age making it the oldest wooden church Jordans Men in Newfoundland still standing on its original foundation.
Mr. Benniot recalls times when the church was packed for services, when the church was a place his entire town took pride in and when people from other towns went to get married.
All of the books and the organ have been moved to Port aux Basques for safe keeping. However the old brass bell is still attached to the church as it was in 1859 when the church was constructed.
It saddens Mr. Benniot to know that slowly this church is falling down and that someday the damage will be too excessive to think about repairs.
"With its history the church can be a great tourist attraction," said Mr. Benniot.
The steps are falling apart and the roof is starting to leak. Water has gotten inside at some of the tiles and one section of the ceiling has started to fall down.
According to records a group in the community did go Nike Air Jordan 4 Pinnacle
to heritage foundation in the past to ask for help with moving the church; however this is not something that the grant covers and the move was never made.
Mr. Benniot wonders why this church was left behind, and would like to know why is there nothing being done to preserve it. These are questions that have gone unanswered for nearly six years.
This grant would cover 50 per cent of the cost of work to be done and the owner would be responsible for the remaining half.
Peter Whittle, PR and events specialist with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador, confirmed that Bethany United Church in Petites was designated a Registered Heritage Structure in July, 1994.
"The grant would also depend on the future of the church, there would have to be a plan to keep the church maintained and a purpose for the building," said Mr. Whittle.
